What's really causing it.

Type II diabetes isn't bad luck. It's the body's predictable response to a stack of modern inputs. Here are the ones to know — including the ones nobody talks about.

Sugar — far too much

The single biggest driver. Soda, juice, cereal, pastries, sauces, dressings, 'healthy' yogurts. The American diet averages 17 teaspoons a day. Your liver can't keep up.

The sugar nobody talks about: refined carbs

Bread, pasta, white rice, crackers, chips. Your body converts these to glucose in minutes. A bagel hits your blood like a bowl of sugar.

Diet drinks (yes, really)

Artificial sweeteners are linked to altered gut bacteria, increased insulin resistance, and stronger cravings. 'Zero calories' is not 'zero impact.'

Alcohol

Empty carbs, liver strain, and overnight glucose dysregulation. Beer and sweet cocktails are the worst offenders. A daily drink is not free.

Plastics & microplastics

Phthalates and BPA leach from plastic bottles, food containers, and receipts. Mounting evidence links them to insulin resistance. Filter water, glass containers, no microwaving plastic.

Lack of movement

Muscles are your largest glucose sink. Sitting all day means glucose has nowhere to go. A 10-minute walk after meals can drop post-meal glucose by 20+ points.

Ultra-processed food

Anything with more than 5 ingredients you can't pronounce. Engineered to override fullness signals. The single biggest predictor of weight gain in modern diets.

Poor sleep

One bad night raises fasting glucose. Chronic short sleep (under 6 hours) doubles diabetes risk. Sleep is not optional — it's metabolic.

Chronic stress

Cortisol tells your liver to dump glucose. Constant low-grade stress = constantly elevated blood sugar, even without eating.

Smoking & vaping

Both raise insulin resistance and damage blood vessels — accelerating every diabetic complication.

The good news: these are inputs, not destiny. Change the inputs and your blood sugar follows — usually within weeks.
